Work Release

The Work Release program enables those convicted of non-violent crimes to keep their jobs and serve their time in jail at night and on weekends. Click here for a printable checklist for the program.

Current guidelines for the Work Release program are:

1 Upon arrival to the jail to begin sentence, participants are required to submit a copy of the Work Release Commitment Order from the court. Failure to bring your commitment order may cause you to be refused admission to the jail and/or admission to the Work Release program until your commitment order can be verified.
2 Participants are required to submit the first week Work Release fee (20% of your adjusted gross weekly income or $25.00 per day, which ever is greater) at the time of incarceration and each subsequent week thereafter (Fridays will be the Work Release paydays. Participants will have until Sunday to pay for the next week of Work Release), payments (cash or money order) must be made in advance unless otherwise stated on the commitment order. Each participant will be required to provide an original or copy of their pay stub for the Work Release file, hours worked must match the totals on the pay stub. If payments are not up to date, you will not be released for work on Monday. Partial payments will not be accepted.
3 You are required to bring a combination padlock for your locker. If you do not bring your own lock, you will be required to purchase a lock for $5.00. The Livingston County Sheriff/Jail will not be responsible for any missing, lost or stolen valuables while you are incarcerated.
4 Participants will be allowed to park their vehicles in the parking lot directly south of the Sheriff Department.
5 No money except for Work Release fees is allowed; any additional money will be deposited into the inmate trust account.
6 No personal property will be allowed, except for approved educational materials, work cloths and a wallet. All (male & female) Work Release inmates must wear white t-shirt and white underwear. All hygiene items must be purchased through the jail commissary, which is available once a week. Work Release inmates are only allowed to purchase hygiene items from the jail commissary. Non-slip sandals will be provided.   
7 Do not bring or leave beverage or food containers of any kind into the jail or onto county property.
8 Laundering of work clothing is the responsibility of the inmate. The Jail Administrator must approve arrangements for special circumstances. Livingston County Jail (inmate workers) is responsible for the laundering of bedding and towels.
9 Livingston County Sheriff/ Jail staff reserves the right to search any inmate and their vehicle that is assigned to Work Release.
10 The Livingston County Jail is a nonsmoking facility; any tobacco products brought in will be confiscated and destroyed.
11 There will be no use or possession of alcohol or illicit drugs of any type. Participants are subject to random testing for drug or alcohol use.
12 Any attempt to bring prohibited items into the jail will result in removal from the Work Release Program. Any attempt to bring illegal items into the jail or being in possession of illegal items will result in your being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
13 Each Work Release participant will need to provide the following typed on company letter head:

A. The assigned work hours (Work Release will only be allowed to out for a total of (6) days a week, and no more than twelve (12) hours per day including travel time. There will be no exceptions. The work days may vary but will be restricted to six days a week.)
B. Location of work site
C. Supervisor’s name & Phone number
D. Those work release inmates that are self-employed must have/ and provide a cell phone number that they can be contacted on while at work.
E. Failure to keep work site current will result in removal from the program. Calls will be received at the jail 517-546-2445.

14 Violation of travel time without substantial cause will be reason for termination. Work Release participants shall take the most direct route from the jail to their place of work, and the same for the return route. If for some reason your workday has been cut short you will be expected to return to the jail immediately, failure to do so may result in removal from the program.
15  It will be expected that all Work Release inmates will have New Years Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day off. If an inmate is expected to work on one of those holidays it must be requested in writing two weeks prior to the date to Lt. Cremonte or Lt. Kinaschuk. The request must include the supervisor’s name and telephone number, along with the work location for the holiday.
16 Participants are not to receive or send any mail or packages from the Livingston County Jail.
17  There will be no visitation during your participation in the Work Release Program; however, inmates sentenced in excess of ten (10) days will be afforded regular visitation rights. Female visiting hours will be on Saturday from 9 AM. To 11:30 AM and from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM Male visiting hours will be on Friday from 6:00 PM till 9:30 PM.
18 Lunch arrangements will be up to the individual, however, you are expected to have your lunch in the vicinity of your work location. Establishments that serve alcoholic beverages are prohibited, as is the consumption of alcohol.
19 Any violations of the Livingston County Jail rules, Work Release Program Guidelines or any rules or stipulations ordered by the Court, may result in removal from the program, completion of sentence with straight jail time and loss of good time. Any violations of these rules will be reported back to the original sentencing court.
20 Any additions or deletions to these rules must be in writing and signed by a Sergeant or persons of higher rank of the Livingston County Sheriff Department/ Jail.

22 In accordance with Rules & Regulations for Inmates, Item No. 11, beds are to be made at all times when not occupied.
